Poor temperature control

In order to save money GE replaced the refrigerator compartment chiller by a gate system utilizing the cold air from the freezer chiller. The refrigerator compartment is now cooled by freezer air flowing into the refrigerator compartment via some sort of blast gate controlled by a temperature sensor. The cold air inlet is located in the center upper back of the refrigerator compartment; the sensor is centered on the upper panel by the door. That means that you cannot have anything on the center upper shelf interfering with the airflow between those two. The instructions don™™t tell you not to but, If you do, the cold air inlet flow will be disrupted and temperature control will be erratic as I found out when I stored some berries on the rear of the upper shelf and most of my refrigerated food froze solid over the next few hours. A 10CFR21-certified temperature logger I subsequently installed revealed swings between 15 and 41 degF. The refrigerator setpoint is at 37 degF. In addition to cost reduction, this design shortcut also helps reduce power consumption down to 160W! Assuming you limit interactions such as opening and closing refrigerator doors down to a strict minimum of course. I've solicited help many times only to get platitudes and deflections in return. Bodewell (the service company) acknowledges the issue but offer no real solutions. One technician suggested not to store any food in front of the cold air inlet!!

Smallest freezer ever and not the quietest

It™™s the smallest freezer I™™ve ever seen. We have to spend more money and purchase another fridge/freezer for the garage. Would not recommend it for a family with more than 2 people. It™™s also much louder than our GE profile that was pretty old.

Happy with this refrigerator. Easy to keep clean, large-sized shelves on the doors. Holds enough food for two people. Once in a while you can hear the ice maker, but overall, it is very quiet. I really like the warning beep if the door is open too long. It is a beautiful model and fits well in the kitchen space. It is also easy to pull out to do cleaning behind it. The freezer size could be larger. Otherwise, it is perfect for our needs.

The refrigerator section is pretty good. It has a nice capacity, although the shelves seem kind of cheap. The chilled water feature isn™™t very good, as the spout is so close to the wall that trying to fill thick chill cups is a challenge. The freezer section though is poor. Capacity is decent, but it does not open or close smoothly. It makes ice well, but there doen™™t seem to be a way to keep it from making too much ice unless you shut it off. Clearly not much engineering effort was put into that section.

This has been the worst refrigerator. I called for service because of the humming noise just to be advised that this was normal and everything was good. The refrigerator is making a loud noise. I™™m not sure what is the problem. But I feel that I™™m stuck with the refrigerator that has humming noise. Overall, I would not recommend this refrigerator.

It's a beautiful fridge, though it's quite noisy! Also, we realized after two years of normal use that the the lowest shelf is supposed to have two support pegs on each side, but ours only has one on each side, thus the shelf doesn't stay up! Make sure to examine yours carefully agains the product diagram to make sure it's 100% as intended.

Despite smaller capacity, my French door Cafe refrigerator after one year performs well consistently. I ordered brass door handles as an aesthetic upgrade. They lift the look from good design to great design with pizazz. Very happy with the Cafe line. Next on order is a Cafe slide-in range. Then a Cafe microwave. Thank you to GE for well-functioning appliances that look beautiful.

Freezer: Since day 1 - freezer door strips icing up, interior is covered in frost the entire time. Have had this for 2.5 weeks -Refigerator - freezing food to point of being a solid. -Installers set temp to 37 degrees. after discovering frozen yogurt and cottage cheese, I raised it to 39 which is the temp I had my previous refrigerator set at. -The entire unit runs estimated 20 hours out of 24 and hums all the time Called the Appliance store where it was purchased 3 days after been in our home stating our concern and soonest we could get a service person to come look at the problem, which now have become problems was 3 weeks out. No intentions of keeping this appliance. Much too new to experience all these issues. Have asked for a brand new refrigerator or my money back. Still waiting for a reply for store.

Cafe Ref needs a 4" Filler if against a side wall

Is very important to know that if this Fridge is against a side wall, the CAFE' Refrigerators Need a 4" filler between the wall and fridge in order for the door to swing open at a 90°. Most high-end models have a hinge where the door swings within itself. For a small kitchen, 4" is a lot of storage space to lose. It's a poor Architectual design because that hinge technology does exist. The handle will bump into the side wall unless it's a shallow enough side wall in which the handle can open into the doorway and not hit the wall.

Love the double doors. The door shelves are great. What is disappointing is how shallow the freezer door opens. The worst part is the ice tray banging every time. It seems slightly noisier than our old GE Profile but not enough to be an issue.

I don™™t think the freezer has enough room for any amount of food. We could fit 3 packages of chicken and 3 packages of beef, 2 vegetables and 3 frozen fruit, and some ice cubes. Barely enough for a full week. Also the shelves don™™t have enough room. The shelves aren™™t interchangeable between sides. Also a gallon of milk needs to be on the right side and the 1/2 shelf has to be made 1/2.

I like this fridge quite a bit, but unfortunately it is very noisy. I would expect a much quieter operation from an expensive appliance. We already had the service tech come out and he said unfortunately this is normal. The compressor seems to be the culprit, even after the technician tightened everything up. It makes a ringing sound that gets reflected off the wall and is very noticeable and distracting.

AWFUL LIGHTING on a beautiful appliance. I recently bought a suite of CafÃ appliances, including this microwave/hood combo. Seems like a fine appliance EXCEPT for the under-appliance lighting. A single halogen bulb is included, which provides limited light and extreme heat. This is GE™™s Cadillac brand and they didn™™t include LED lighting? The lighting is worse than the 20-year old model I™™m replacing. Halogen™¦really??? So extremely disappointed in GE engineering™¦a huge ™miss™ on this one™¦and something I™™ll be living with for many years.

Looks great and easy to clean! We bought this to replace our fridge that stopped working. This fridge is laid out in side very nicely making it feel spacious and easy to find what you™™re looking for, even though it has smaller square footage then some other models that are counter depth.

Aitoro was the worst purchase experience ever

The worst appliance purchase in my life. The short story is that after 3 deliveries of damaged and faulty Cafe refrigerator/freezers over period of 3 + weeks I was given an option by the dealer Aitoro in Norwalk, CT. 1. Wait for a fourth attempt to deliver a replacement. 2. They will remove the appliance and reimburse for the full amount paid. 3. Take a $200 ™scratched™ product refund with the standard warrantee. Having no confidence after three attempts coupled with my wife not wanting them in the house again I took the last offer. I asked for a complete refund and to keep the damaged product. It was dented on both the top and side. I can send photos if interested. My last conversation with the dealer was with their customer care manager ( Owen) I told him the $200 was not fair or adequate. He said ™my name is not on the building™ I asked him to speak with the owner. When Owen got back to me he said there is no flexibility. I have 5 rentals and have purchased dozens of appliance in the past 30 years from a different local dealer. Unfortunately, that dealer moved their showroom an hour away so I tried Aitoro. This is my personal home and the experience was terrible. Before I post on review boards I wanted to contact the manufacturer and make them aware of my experience.

Due to availability, we had to order a 32" refrigerator for a 33" space. The inside is much smaller than our previous refrigerator, so this new one doesn't hold as much. The in-refrigerator water feature is awkward to use. Access to contents in bottom freezer is challenging. And, the appliance often makes loud humming and buzzing noises that are unrelated to the ice maker or anything else we could think of. Sounds like it's about to take off into space. Ugh

Do not purchase this item. Randomly freezes items In fridge. Then freezer frosted over solid ice everywhere. Had less than a year. Will cost big $ to fix. I spent a lot of money for this refrigerator, and I believe it is a total lemon. I am hoping the repair actually resolves the problem. Have a garage fridge that has worked since 1980™¦. It is Still working just fine . I bought all Cafe products for our kitchen, and I am disappointed in the fridge.

It™™s small, obviously. That™™s not the worst of it. The fan inside the fridge compartment turns on every so often and the blades hit the housing. Very loud and annoying and not really sure what the fix might be. The second problem is uneven cooling. Temps set at 39 yet watermelon freezes on one side. Do not recommend.

Beautiful looking fridge but I had problems right off the bat with it freezing all of my produce in the main fridge part, even with the temp at the lowest setting. I find the layout to not be the most efficient for storing food. It would be great for those who don™™t cook much or who don™™t have a Costco membership :)

We have had our fridge for 7 months now. About 2 months ago, it started randomly making a high pitch squeak that is very loud. About the same time it started freezing w everything in the back of the fridge. We bought this brand because it is supposed to be higher quality. But the inside drawers and inserts are all flimsy and worse quality than any other fridge we have owned. The setup of the freezer doesn™™t allow for much either. We spent the extra money because we needed a fridge asap and this was the one we could get the quickest. Now I wish we had gone with something cheaper.

Do Not Buy - Does Not Maintain Appropriate Temp

I bought this refrigerator less than 2 years ago, and it started giving me problems less than 8 months after installation. I have consistently kept it on the recommended temperature setting of 37 degrees. The refrigerator compartment has ice/icicles along its back, with the most frost building around the vent. It has frozen my eggs repeatedly, my salads, and my coffee. During these periods of intensely cold temperatures, the refrigerator runs continuously, causing my electric bill to increase. Periods of freezing in the refrigerator alternate with days when the temperature rises, the ice melts, and there is moisture/condensation throughout the upper part of the unit, causing my food to get soggy. The increase in temperature approaches room temperature with my food/drinks barely cool. I have had to throw out milk, eggs, yogurt, creamers, cream cheese, meat, etc. due to spoilage. As far as the freezer, it goes through periods during which it works fine, but then it over-freezes, literally producing snow and sheets of ice. GE repairmen have been to my home 7 times, and it is still not working properly. I have had to defrost the unit 3 times, causing me to lose hundreds of dollars of good food. Last week, they decided that the compressor needs to be replaced and want me to wait two more weeks until they can install a new one. That is where I drew the line. This appliance is beyond repair. It is inherently defective and needs to be replaced. However, GE insists that the only way it can be replaced is if all possible repair options are exhausted. It is unreasonable for me to wait any longer, and I will be pursuing this further. There is even a Class Action Lawsuit in motion against certain GE refrigerators at this time. Please do not waste your money or your peace on this product.

Overall a good fridge. I am happy with the general design and layout. A few comments: It takes getting used to the manner in which the doors are hinged as there is a significant "cam/spring" device that prevents the doors from gently closing from full open to closed; at about 15 or so degrees from closing, they need a push to overcome the hinge device. What is good about this, however, is that the final closing of the doors is quite positive. I have also found that the bottom (full width) temp controlled drawer has frozen the items stowed in/at the back of the drawer. I have decreased the temp setting to no avail. The ice cubes from the ice maker tend to overflow on occasion (notable with spillage on opening the freezer). The inner freezer drawer does not have well engineered slides; they are awkward and do not keep the drawer "true" when sliding it and do not have any sort of cushioned stops. The ice cubes are small.... It's a pretty good product for the cost and I hope it has a good longevity.

So far, so good. We're fortunate that there was a Cafe refrigerator that fit our space. Not a lot of options for a 33" space anymore. It definitely makes a statement in the kitchen. And now that the kitchen is remodeled, it really stands out.
